with AOD Problems

 

Warning Signs:

 

Below are some common warning signs that a student may have a drinking/ drugging problem or is at risk of developing one.

 

• Dramatic decline in academic performance; makes excuses for poor performance or missing classes; frequently requests extensions/turns in work late or not at all.

• Cuts classes/drops a class/comes to class late/ comes to class with a hangover or high.

• Changes in personality; shifts in moos or emotions.

• Brags about their alcohol or other drug use; conversations are frequently about using.

• Cannnot seem to have fun without drinking/using other drugs.

• Loss of motivation or energy or change in appearance.

• Experiences frequent health problems (illness, injury).

• Spends most of his or her money on drugs or alcohol.

 

What You Can Do:

 

• Reinforce norms; refrain from making comments that normalize high risk drinking.

• Do not diminish the effects from making comments that normalize high risk drinking.

• Consult with the Counseling Center if you have concerns about a student.

• Refer a student who needs help to the Counseling Center.

• When confronting a student's problem use caring phrases like "You haven't looked well lately..." or " I knowsomeone at the counseling center who can help you."
